“We were guided by our experience from Hurricane Sandy, which plunged a large portion of our area into total darkness and cold for more than a week," said Joy Vottero, the Y’s executive director. “The generator is a response to that possibility, envisioning the Y’s facility as a haven for the community. The ability to gain warmth and a hot shower can be a huge benefit under such circumstances.”
Vottero said one need not be a member of the Y to take advantage of the service if it is needed.
“We’re here for all,” she said. “It’s our mission.”
The generator, manufactured by Kohler, is designated to be both efficient and reliable in a large-scale emergency.
Energized by diesel fuel, the apparatus is expected to produce enough power to keep the Y up and running at almost full capacity.
The project was approved by the Y's board as part of a multi-year community contribution and upgrade of its 13-acre complex.
The upgrade also included installation of the turf fields behind the venue, technology-driven air treatment equipment for the pool areas, and a new access road onto the property to facilitate access for its members.
The Y has its roots as a community service organization for more than 72 years, when it was established to assist families during World War II.
